VNS Health has programs that help veterans navigate the healthcare system as they age. If your loved one is a veteran and would benefit from home care, hospice care, or other services, the Veterans Outreach program will connect them with the right services to get them the care they need.
The Veterans Administration (VA) has a vast array of benefits for veterans. Researching and applying for them can be overwhelming. Plus, many veterans don’t know that they can receive VA benefits. If your loved one is a veteran, you may have questions about what benefits you’re both eligible for and how to access them.
Veterans Outreach
VNS Health Veterans Outreach connects you and your loved one with programs that support the unique needs of a veteran. You’ll have a dedicated Veterans Liaison — who is a veteran themself — who can help you and your loved one understand what benefits are available and how to make the most of them.
Veterans often experience specific healthcare issues, especially as they age. These issues may be the result of exposure to radiation, burn pits, or chemicals like Agent Orange, or the result of injuries sustained during service.
At VNS Health, veterans and their caregivers are connected with “service-connected benefits” — or benefits that are designed to support veterans and their families.
What are service-connected benefits?
Service-connected benefits support veterans’ unique needs for conditions arising from their military service, which may include:
Cancers such as lung, bone, brain, esophageal, or bladder cancer
Illnesses such as Lou Gehrig’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, or Alzheimer’s disease
Injuries such as traumatic brain injuries
Many veterans’ benefits go unused. Whether eligible for income-based benefits, non-income-based benefits, or both, your loved one will get connected with the resources that best fit their needs. And if your loved one already has health care benefits from Medicare, Medicaid, or private insurance, you'll be directed to supplemental benefits that will provide even more support.
VNS Health conducts ongoing outreach with organizations that support veterans and their loved ones to provide the most up-to-date resources and information about healthcare benefits for veterans and their families. The VNS Health Veterans Outreach team, as well as the Veterans Home Care and Veterans Hospice Care teams, work closely with:
VA hospitals
Local hospitals, such as Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and NYU Langone
Veteran community organizations such as VFW posts, the American Legion, Elks lodges, Rotary clubs, Catholic War Veterans, and Auxiliary of the USA
We’ll also help you communicate with these organizations so you can receive all of the benefits available to you.
How Veterans Outreach Supports Veterans
Veterans Liaisons are veterans themselves, so they know the unique challenges veterans face. It can be hard to ask for help, but available benefits can help relieve financial stress and increase quality of life.
There is also support for you as a family member and loved one caring for a veteran. VNS Health can help you access resources like death benefits and survivor benefits to make an otherwise challenging time a little less overwhelming. Finally, VNS Health helps find ways to honor veterans’ service, such as recognition ceremonies and medal recovery.
