How To Receive

Details on how to apply

  1. Schedule a network primary care provider appointment and ask for STI screening.

    • Any provider in a primary care setting can conduct the STI screening (such as a free clinic) in case your loved one does not wish to have their primary care provider do it.

  2. Attend the appointment and complete the screenings.

  3. Engage in recommended follow-up treatment and/or referrals.

Sexually transmitted infection (STI) screenings are covered for for chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, and Hepatitis B. These screenings are covered for pregnant women and for certain people who are at increased risk for an STI when the tests are ordered by a primary care provider. The Plan covers these tests once every 12 months or at certain times during pregnancy.

The Plan also covers up to two individual 20 to 30 minute, face-to-face high-intensity behavioral counseling sessions each year for sexually active adults at increased risk for STIs. The Plan will only cover these counseling sessions as a preventive service if they are provided by a primary care provider and take place in a primary care setting, such as a doctor’s office.

Those at increased risk for an STI are those who are sexually active without protection, especially with multiple sexual partners, and those who share needles for injection (whether prescription or illicit substances).  Contrary to popular belief, the older adult population is no exception.

While our senior loved ones engaging in sexual activity, particularly with multiple partners, may not be top of mind for us, it is not uncommon, especially in community living settings (retirement neighborhoods/areas, independent living, assisted living, memory care).  Likewise, sharing injection needles, especially among those with diabetes, is common.  And there is illicit intravenous drug use among older adults, as well.  Both behaviors can lead to significant health issues.

These behaviors can result in contracting chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, and Hepatitis B.  An STI screening will check for each of these infections. An STI screening is available every 12 months for those at increased risk for infection when ordered by a primary care provider in a primary care setting.

Also covered are up to 2 face-to-face, high-intensity behavioral counseling sessions per year for sexually active adults at increased risk for STIs. Each session can run for about 20–30 minutes.

Things to know

A primary care provider must order the screening or make a referral for behavioral counseling. Only counseling sessions with a primary care provider in a primary care setting (like a doctor’s office or clinic) are covered. Counseling as a preventive service in an inpatient setting (like a skilled nursing facility) is not covered.
