A personal emergency response system, or PERS, is a wearable electronic device that enables members to secure help in the event of a physical, emotional, or environmental emergency.
A PERS has three components: a small radio transmitter, a console connected to a telephone, and an emergency response center that monitors calls.
These systems signal a response center once a help button is activated. In the event of an emergency (or even accidental activation), the signal is received and appropriately acted on by the contracted response center.
Response center staff are trained on how best to respond to the situation, whether that is to reach out to the designated emergency contact(s), contact authorities like fire or police departments, connect the caller with another hotline (such as crisis intervention), or call 9-1-1 to send emergency services.
PERS can help your loved one continue to live independently and also alleviate difficult decisions, such as hiring in-home care or moving them.
