A partial hospitalization program (PHP) is a structured program of active psychiatric treatment, provided as a hospital outpatient service or by a community health center, that is more intense than the case received in a provider's office or therapist's office and serves as an alternative to inpatient psychiatric hospitalization (in qualified cases).
PHP is an aggressive, consistent implementation of outpatient psychiatric services for 6 to 8 hours each day, 3 to 5 days a week (sometimes up to 7 days depending on the severity of the illness and available healthcare resources).
Services include both specialized and generic training, treatment, health, and related services. It involves the implementation of an individualized care plan developed with and supervised by a psychiatrist and other qualified mental health professionals (nurses, social workers) that prescribes specific therapies and activities.
Patients in PHP continue to live at home and commute to the treatment center. The average length of PHP is 3 to 4 weeks or about twice that of an inpatient admission.
