Know What to Expect from a Colonoscopy or FIT Test
Thinking about colorectal cancer screening can feel overwhelming — especially if you’re not sure what the process involves. But knowing what to expect can take away a lot of the fear and help you take the next step with confidence.

Helpful tip: Schedule the colonoscopy for a day when you can take it easy. Most people are back to normal the next day.
📹 Colonoscopy: In-Clinic, More Involved
Before the test:
You’ll need to drink a prep solution to clean out your colon — usually the day before.
You'll need to fast (no solid food), and arrange a ride home since sedation is used.
Get more support and guidance on insurance benefits, medical records and legal forms.
Helpful brings together your insurance benefits, legal documents, and medical records in one personalized place — so you always know what you have, and never have to search again.

🧪 FIT Test: Easy and Done at Home
Before the test:
No prep or changes to your diet.
Your doctor will give you a kit with clear instructions.
During the test:
Use the kit to collect a small stool sample at home.
Package it as instructed and send it to the lab (or return it to your doctor).
After the test:
Results usually come back in a few days.
If your test is positive (meaning blood is found), your doctor will recommend a colonoscopy to follow up.
During the test:
You’ll be sedated and won’t feel anything.
A doctor will use a thin, flexible camera to look inside your colon and remove any polyps if needed.
After the test:
You’ll rest in the clinic for a short time, then go home.
You might feel gassy or a little tired.
Your doctor will share the results within a few days.
🔍 What Do the Results Mean?
Normal result: No signs of cancer or polyps. You’ll follow up again in 1–10 years, depending on the test.
Abnormal result: Doesn’t mean cancer — but your doctor may do more tests or remove polyps for further checking.
🤔 Still Not Sure?
Both tests are safe and effective. The key is choosing the one you feel comfortable completing. And if you start with a FIT test and it comes back positive, that doesn’t mean something’s wrong — it just means you’ll follow up with a colonoscopy to take a closer look.
📅 Take the Next Step
Ask your doctor which test they recommend for you.
Request a FIT kit if you want to get started from home.
Book your colonoscopy if you’ve already had a positive FIT or are due for full screening.
Screening saves lives — and knowing what to expect makes it easier to begin.
